Last night, I finally made it to Soup and Bread at Robert’s Westside in Forest Park — it’s a community event held at 6 p.m. every third Tuesday of the month. Volunteers bring a crockpot of soup (we had a dozen or so last night), and for a suggested donation of $10, we serve soup and bread as long as supplies last. Every month supports a different local charity — last night, we raised $645 for NAMI (a local mental health org).
It’s a great opportunity hang out and eat yumminess in community — bring your friends! There was live music playing, I enjoyed a tasty Strongbow from the bar while serving, and you get to taste as many soups as you like.
I didn’t try everything, but I can say that both the caramelized gochujang tomato and the Ethiopian spiced lentil were delicious. I made chicken mulligatawny, and it was all gone within an hour. All the cooks provide a list of ingredients, so you can check for allergies, etc. There’s also bread and usually cookies too.
If you’re interested in eating soup, just come. If you’re interested in cooking, show up with a crockpot of soup. If you’d like to know more, take a look at Soup and Bread West.
They’ve been doing this for three years so far (Jennifer Quinlan, organizer, take a bow!), and it’s just a great, fun community resource. Recommended!
(Jennifer, tell me if I got anything wrong!)
