Sometimes you just want a big plate of rice.
Taking it relatively easy today — I slept in a bit, and spent most of the morning doing laundry, re-watching Star Trek episodes, playing Polytopia, and straightening up the first floor. I’m almost done putting away Christmas, except for the lights and greenery, which will stay up for another month or two.
Yesterday was the first day being really open to people at the studio — yarn circle went great, and I’m looking forward to continuing that Saturday mornings for the next few months. I’m fretting a little bit because it seems there’s lots more interest than there’s room for actual chairs. Something like 90 people said they were interested in yesterday’s circle, but thankfully only about 15 showed up. (I think I can fit about 20, maybe 25 if we make a smaller circle in the back…)
But I guess if we get full enough that we’re turning people away (SO SAD), we can do a sign-up sheet, so at least people know there’s a chair for them before they venture out into the cold. And if there’s that much interest, I’m happy to open up another time slot, especially if I can get someone else to co-host. Well, we’ll see.
The afternoon was supposed to be a preview day for the studio, but I think that’s a term (I made up) that just confused people, because I think people thought the studio wasn’t really open.
It’s open! Very soft open, but I think I’d better just call it soft open going forward. I’ve been thinking about the hours, and Laurette Stefani Anderson, I think I’d like to adjust it a little.
I can commit to:
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, 12 – 4, starting next week
So that’s 12-4 on:
• Jan 23 – 25
• Jan 30 – Feb 1
• Feb 6 – 8 (I may need to go to Capricon for some of that, but I’ll get coverage if so)
• Feb 13 – 15
• Feb 20 – 22
Laurette, let me know if you want to add any time onto those hours in the next five weeks. I’m planning to revamp the poster and print it again. I also did the poster in a hurry and didn’t worry about designing it with our branding, etc. — if you want to mess with the design, let me know, and I’ll send you the Canva link.
And then we’re tentatively planning to do Grand Opening Weekend February 27 – 29. There will be various party-like events scheduled, and hopefully we can do the ribbon-cutting then too. More details on that as we figure them out.
(Connor Nevitt, I’m not sure where on the website we’re putting the Serendib House stuff — I think we need a new tab, at least? Let’s talk about it at the meeting tomorrow. Stephanie Bailey, I think I mostly need Connor tomorrow , about the website and also setting up a page for scheduling workshops — everyone else can just check in on Slack, if that works?)
Okay, sorry for all the logistics talk, folks. It’s a bit of a balancing act, trying to figure out when I can reasonably plan to be at the store, given my teaching schedule (Tuesday / Thursday this semester, which helps). When it’s quiet at the studio, I can actually get a lot of work done — I spent much of yesterday afternoon working on class prep rather than studio stuff, for example.
So I’m hoping that this will continue to be feasible — that I can work when it’s quiet…and if it gets busier, then I can afford to hire more help? Wouldn’t that be a nice problem to have, if the store got too busy? 🙂
I think my brain is sufficiently full of logistics for now. Back to laundry and Star Trek for a bit, then shower and dress and head to the studio for gardener meet-up — seed, cuttings, and houseplants swap (or just giveaway). I have tea and nibbles for all…. (link to event in comments).
