Dragging that legacy behind us

I don’t think this is why everyone votes GOP. But I do think it’s why a significant percentage of people do, often on a subconscious level they’re not really aware of. As Nalo Hopkinson says, ‘Racism is a sea of shit that we’re all swimming in, and if you’re swimming in shit, it’s inevitable that some of it will stick to you.’

Time (and well past time) to become aware of this dynamic if you aren’t already. If it’s in your family, consider if talking to them could possibly make a difference in their attitudes. If it’s lurking in your own subconscious, root it out.

Are the Black kids loud on the subway, or in the library (in the non-quiet zones)? Maybe take a second to think, “Isn’t it delightful to have so many different cultural practices mixing together?” And then see if you can take joy in their exuberance and joy.

It wasn’t so long ago that terrible brutal things happened to Black people in America who were too loud. (Or dared to learn to read.) We’re dragging that legacy behind us with every step. This country makes me so sad sometimes. But I still love America, and I believe we can do better.
