When Kavi was three years old, I recorded some lullabies for her — just the songs I sang to her all the time, along with one I’d written for her. I don’t remember now why I recorded them then — my best guess is that I was going out of town and thought it might help Kevin with getting her to sleep.
Yesterday, I recorded some more, loaded them all onto a little USB drive, and gave them to her in a little envelope with a note on the front — “for when you have trouble sleeping”
She may never listen to them. I’m not the best singer, and these are just very simple recordings using my phone’s voice memo — they’re not professional at all. No music, just my voice. But I feel better, knowing she can hear my voice whenever she wants.
At some point, I want to sit down and write the sheet music out — I swear I did that once, but I can’t find it now. But here are the lyrics and me singing the tune, just in case you’re in need of another lullaby. I don’t write a lot of songs (maybe three total in my life?), so no critique, please. Just wanted to share a little sweetness and love.
Stores to Be Told
(Kavya’s Lullaby)
You can walk the darkest highways
You can sail the stormy seas
You can visit cities bright and cities bold
But when your feet get tired on that shining silver path
Remember a single line of gold
My hands will light a candle in the darkness
And my heart will want to keep you safe at home
Many roads I’ve travelled
Down dark and dusty shadows
But there are still so very many stories to be told.\
There’ll be a light in my window
Whenever you come by
Shining in the night so clear and cold
Days and months and years gone by
I will still be waiting
Waiting to hear how all your stories will unfold.
My hands will light a candle in the darkness
My voice will whisper hopes
For your safe journeying, my darling
Many roads I’ve travelled
Down dark and dusty shadows
But there are still so very many stories to be told.
