Do I look a little glazed?

School board meeting 6:30 – 11:30. Or, since I’m currently at a writing retreat in Kaua’i, 2:30 – 7:30. Five hours either way, and while I’m glad it’s not 11:30 for my body clock’s sake, that was a pretty long meeting. Do I look a little glazed? I feel a little glazed.

The funny thing is, there’s weird regulations about school board meetings that say if you’re traveling for work, you’re allowed to join the meeting remotely via Zoom (which is what I did), but if you’re on vacation, you’re not allowed to. Why??? I have no idea. Is there any kind of logical rationale to that?

Now this is definitely a work retreat, even if a somewhat self-directed one, and I’ve already gotten a ton done in the last three days (esp. counting all the writing on the plane). But I admit, my writing friends here were arguing vehemently that I should call this a vacation and skip the board meeting, and it’s true that I haven’t actually made it to the beach yet, and this afternoon would have been very nice…

…but in this time of constitutional crisis on the national front, it seems even more important that those of us in the tiniest of local elected offices show up and do the job, to the best of our abilities. No regrets.
