January is dead for small businesses

Boo — I’m about $42 short of making rent at Berwyn Sprout this month. This isn’t really a surprise; January is just dead for small businesses, since most folks are kind of broke after Christmas. Last January was also dead and I didn’t make rent then either.

(EDITING TO NOTE: I did fine in November and December, and have enough to cover the shortfall for January, so I’m in no actual danger of having to close the shop or anything. Just wanted to draw attention to the cycles for small businesses, and how January is difficult.)

If you ARE spending money right now, it’s a particularly good time to support any local small businesses you like, as many of them are probably feeling a little panicked at the moment.

It should start picking up by the middle of February (hooray for Valentine’s and Galentine’s), BUT, since this is the last day of January, I’ll just note that my Sri Lankan cookbooks are 30% off at Sprout, and in general, I’ve moved over most of my stock from the Berwyn Shops (everything that would fit).

I’ve significantly dropped prices on most of it — generally items are priced 20-40% lower than they were in December at my shed shop. Winter sale! So if there was something you were thinking of getting and it was just a little higher than you wanted to spend, now is your chance. 🙂

New additions include lots of handmade candles and candle jars. White candles are unscented. Green scented candles offered in fir forest (fir needles, night air, rain) and conservatory (tomato leaf and petrichor).
