Quick review of Occidental on the college tour, mostly to say that we liked it, and Kavi will almost certainly be applying there. I particularly like the 9:1 faculty-student ratio. The architecture is a nice blend of historic and modern, and it feels like a very livable and comfortable campus, with a serene, outdoorsy vibe. Only about 2000 students total, which is notably less than her high school, but it seems well resourced.
That’s it for the southern CA tour — she probably won’t be applying to UCLA (big reach), but maybe, and possibly UC San Diego, but I just didn’t have the energy to drive that far (2.5 hrs from where we are). I have used up all my driving energy.
Tomorrow morning we return the rental car, then take the Coast Starlight up to San Jose, with one more tour on Friday, UC Santa Cruz. Driving that steep hill, gah. (We already toured UC Santa Clara, which she’ll likely apply to, along with Berkeley (another huge reach)).
She may also apply to Pomona and Pitzer or Loyola Marymount — we’ll see how it all shakes out. Right now, Kavi is VERY CA-focused, but she hasn’t really seen Midwest or East Coast schools yet — we’ll try to get her to some of those in the fall. There are a lot of options!
Really, I think Kavi will likely be fine wherever she ends up. 🙂 College is more about what you bring to it than anything else — you can get a terrific education at a lot of different schools, if you put the work in.
