Folks, I haven’t said anything yet about the current Hugo Award controversy (https://file770.com/2023-hugo-nomination-report-has…/), and I probably won’t say much substantive anytime soon.
I can think of several plausible scenarios for what’s happened. I’m hoping we’ll get more definitive information sometime soon, and would prefer not to speculate in these early days.
My sympathies to all of the nominees and winners who are having to deal with all of this when I’m sure they’d rather be focused on their writing.
I have a lot of sympathy for the majority of the conrunners involved as well, and especially for the Glasgow Hugo administrators, who are undoubtedly being put under pressure to make substantive changes in a very short time frame.
Please remember that these are all volunteer positions, entailing a tremendous amount of responsibility and labor, for no actual pay. Fandom has been a great gift to the SF/F community. We need to take issues like these seriously, but also understand that if there are things that need fixing, it’s up to us to fix them, together.
A lot of the SF/F community has moved over to Bluesky, and there’s a lot of conversation happening there. I have several invite codes; let me know if you’d like one.
