Mother’s Day 2023

I don’t take Mother’s Day very seriously as a holiday — it’s never been one I get emotional about, and I don’t really care if the kids or Kevin do anything for it. (On my birthday, on the other hand, I expect a great fuss to be made over me…)

I spent a few hours watching Grey’s Anatomy in the morning, then a few hours working on a section of the garden, weeding and planting and getting it ready for mulch tomorrow.

In the afternoon, I ran errands:

– up to Devon to pick up Kavi’s sari blouse and sari, now tailored to fit her very nicely (tailor at Sari Sapne, he did a good job for a reasonable price)

– over to Gethsemane Gardens to spend a $50 gift certificate I’d gotten for Christmas two years ago — I picked up a nice bougainvillea, since my current one is struggling a bit, and it needs a lot of nurturing recovery time, I suspect. I was VERY restrained and didn’t buy anything else, go me!

– then to Ethiopian Diamond for some of my favorite food, plus a stop at the sweet shop next door for a chocolate & raspberry milkshake

– chatted with Jed on the drive back (it’s a long haul, going up to Devon / Gethsemane / Ethiopian Diamond, an hour each way, so I don’t do it so often)

– home around dinnertime, where I told the kids I wouldn’t be cooking, since it was Mother’s Day, but I’d brought some of my favorite food, and it would make me happy if they tried it — Anand was willing to try the tibs and injera, though he wasn’t a huge fan of either — Kavi loved them both. Kevin and I devoured a good portion of the rest, along with tej, and what remains will feed us for a few days. (I particularly recommend their Asa Wat and Shiro.)

– then I said what I’d love is for the family to fill the new raised beds for me so I could plant tomorrow, which the three of them dutifully did

– and Kavi gave me the earrings she’d found for a Mother’s Day gift

– and I dressed Kavi in her sari to check the fit, and I asked her to stay in it for an hour to practice wearing it and moving around in it…

– and then the four of us played a game of Pirate Fluxx

– and then Anand showed me a puzzle game on his iPad, Baba is You, which was lots of fun

– and now I’m going to watch an episode of Mythic Quest with Kevin, and go to sleep.

Much computer work tomorrow — I have gazillion things due. But this was a lovely day, and exactly the kind of day I wanted.

Hope all of you had exactly the kind of day you wanted too.
