Taught My Workshop at the University of Hawai’i

I taught my workshop at the University of Hawai’i, and then met with some of their creative writing doctoral students for a few hours. My host, Shawna Yang Ryan, greeted me with this tuberose and rose lei, which smells amazing.

I’m reading one of her novels, now, Green Island, and it is very good, but also very challenging material (love, betrayal, and family set against the backdrop of a changing Taiwan over the course of the 20th century.)

I was also excited to be able to wear normal shoes without a brace — my ankle still needs a rest periodically, but this is so much better than it was just a few days ago…

Resting in the hotel room now with my foot up, soon joining some faculty and grad students for dinner.

  1. Hello and happy to see that you’re on O’ahu and enjoying Hawai’i from a long time fan of your work. If you have time for a coffee/tea this afternoon, please drop me a line.
