Sequence of hula photos / chants in Lihue airport in Kauai.
A name chant in honor of Kaumuali’i
Answer o heavenly one, o chief to your name chant
The pandanus trees of Ha’ena writhe in the wind
The heavy rain pelts down on Hanalei
There is the moss of Manu’akepa on which people slide and fall
Crisp in the rain and easily gathered in the moonlight
The leaves of the ferns are fresh and green
There is nothing left to be desired
The length and breadth of the greatest mountain is measured
The view before the face of Hihimanu is beautiful, lovely, and majestic
When you gaze down to the base of Maunahina
The tree trunks are straight, the blossoms flourish
The clouds appear to flow towards, and moisten Alaka’i
Regally rises the summit of Wai’ale’ale
Stately is Kalanikini, royal is Kawaikini
Kauai is perfect, set in the calm
To the call of the chanter, the dancer responds.
These images and words been my welcome to Kaua’i on over 20 annual visits. I haven’t returned since Covid.
