An Appreciated River View

Sorry, forgot to post ChiCon schedule yesterday. But it went pretty well!

• Saturday, 9/3, 8:30 a.m. — BTQIA: The Less-Discussed Letters — Grand Hall K

I did fine with bi representation, I think, though I stumbled a bit when trying to ask questions about trans / intersex / asexual stuff of my fellow panelists — they were patient with me, and I appreciate it, but I definitely want to blame the early morning and lack of sleep for my verbal stumbling. Apologies if I said anything particularly stupid or hurtful — I’m trying to learn to do better.

• Saturday 9/3 11:30 a.m. — Toward a Global Canon — Michigan 2

The global canon panel was great, and I think @Suyi Davies Okungbowa has convinced me that what we want is to stop trying to make boxes and sets and limits, and try to really think about canon in an expansive, infinite way.

I wish we’d had time to get to the question of what happens to conversations when no one has read the same books — he had a concept of ‘touchstone’ books that might have addressed some of that, at least. Well, we’ll just have to have him come on our podcast so we can have a much longer conversation about it!

Today, I had a reading this morning (read from “Hush,” I think they liked it), and am about to go be on a podcast panel, where I get to talk about MRAH, which will be fun and new for me:

— Sunday 9/4, 10 a.m. — Themed Readings: Space Opera — Dusable

— Sunday 9/4, 1 p.m. — Podcast Genres: The Zine — Grand Hall L

After that, I’ll be seeing an old friend from the U of C math department (hi, Jordan!) with Roshani and Alex, then stopping by the grand hall to rehearse with the mic, because I’m one of the presenters for a Hugo Award this year, which is also new for me. Funfun!

Question — is it okay for presenters to be a little extra with the dress / costuming, or should I tone it down, since I’m not a nominee? In other words, wear the starry gold crown headpiece that matches my sari, yes / no?

And then after that, pre-party for Hugos, Hugos, then post-party. I’m going to go take some more Advil and I’m guessing I’ll need some caffeine to make it through the day. Hm. I might be able to squeeze in a little nap from 4-5; we’ll see!

View from the room — a very skinny but appreciated riverview. 🙂 I mostly have been commuting from home, but decided to stay for the weekend, and really glad I did — it makes life SO much easier to have a room at the con hotel, and a place to lie down for a bit when I’m crashing! In my 30s, I could just keep going and going, like a little Energizer bunny, but not anymore!
