Everything Is Research

I did get to bed at a reasonable hour last night, but then I woke up at 5:30. I was still tired, so I rolled over and went back to sleep. Then I woke up at 6:30. I was still tired, so I rolled over and went back to sleep. Then I woke up at 7:30. I was still a little tired, but I thought I’d better get up, so I did.

(I was telling this to Anand this morning, and he said that I sounded like someone in a children’s story, and then he proceeded to tell the whole sequence back to me, cackling with laughter throughout. I am glad my exhaustion amuses my children, at least.)

I think I was waking up early due to having some stress about my long mental list of tiny tasks (hard for ADD brain!), so I ended up making a to-do list today, which I probably should do every day, but sometimes I get out of the habit. And then I proceeded to check off two items on the to-do list — alter a swimsuit (15 minutes) and go swim (up to 150 yards today, bit by bit…), so that was nice.

I think I may want to try altering it again, though. It came with these weirdly long straps that tied into big floppy bows at the top, which I suppose was meant to look girly and feminine, but made me feel like I was about five years old. But I loved the botanical print (and it’s reversible, with a black & white version of the print on the other side), and I figured if I hated the straps, I could fix them. Well, it arrived, and I did hate them.

I tried just cutting them and sewing them together at the top, and that works OKAY, but you end up with a visible seam which would be noticeable if I ever wanted to wear it reversed. Also, they have a tendency to slip and twist if you move around much, which is probably fine if all you do is lounge poolside with a strawberry daiquiri, but since I’m using this for lap swimming, it’s annoying.

I think I’m going to remove these straps entirely, and then use the extra strap fabric (there’s lots), to make straps that cross across the back, which I think will hold everything much more securely. I like a swimsuit that holds everything nicely in place, you know? No popping out of anything, especially if you’re taking the kids somewhere! So maybe another 30-60 minutes of work, but I think it’ll be an end result I’m happy with. Not today (it’s not on the list!), but possibly this weekend…

I did put some fun stuff on the list, so while I catch my breath from swimming, I’m going to read more of my English Garden magazine. It’s research, right? Everything is research…
