Breakfast with Mary Robinette Kowal

Lovely surprise — Mary Robinette Kowal was swinging through Chicago, and managed to squeeze in time to go to Delia’s Kitchen with me for breakfast today. (I tried their famous lemon ricotta & blueberry pancakes with blueberry compote — yum!)

In 90 minutes, we managed to cover our lives during the pandemic, family caretaking concerns, what we’re both writing (she’s the author of a host of books — I recommend starting with her debut, Shades of Milk and Honey, which is sort of Bridgerton + magic, or if you prefer SF, the Lady Astronaut books)…

…and lots and lots of arts / education governance stuff — what I’m doing with the SLF and school board, and what she did in her 2-year term as president of SFWA (science fiction and fantasy writers of America, though actually, it’s a more global org these days), and what she’s just taken on as….

…chair of the upcoming D.C. WorldCon. Eep.

I do not envy her that job, but all kudos for stepping boldly forward into the breach, dear friend. So glad we got to spend a little in-person time! And let us keep thinking thinky thoughts about how we can fruitfully partner SFWA and SLF on writing education projects…
