A Guiding Light

This was a fun experiment — I wanted to do a gold, frankincense & myrrh candle for the holidays. I spent a while researching including gold flakes in candles, but it turns out that’s a hard problem, because most gold flake is adultererated, and will turn green over time. I didn’t want to risk sending out candles like that, so instead, I went with a gold mica in the wax — it hardens to a white solid, but as it melts (based on other experiments that I didn’t take photos of, alas), the melted wax returns to the sparkly gold color. Fun.

The scent is frankincense & myrrh, which is a rich, incense-y sort of scent. I still think baby Jesus probably could’ve used some more practical gifts, but hey, it’s seasonal. And my dad really loved the song, “We Three Kings” — it was his favorite carol when I was growing up, and we’d belt it out in the car. So this one is for you, Navaratnasingam Mohanraj. 🙂 Merry Christmas!

“Oh, oh — STAR of wonder, STAR of night,
STAR with royal beauty bright,
Westward leading, still proceeding,

Guide us to thy perfect light…”

I may not be religious myself, but I’ll take a little guiding light anytime…

(Water bottle included in last photo for scale. 🙂 )
