I told my students today…

I told my students today about the frog and the boiling water. Most of them didn't know the story. How, if you put a frog in boiling water, it jumps out. And if you put a frog in cold water, then slowly turn the heat up, it just sits there, not noticing, until it boils to death. We read Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale last week, a novel of a near-future dystopia in which a religious fundamentalist group takes power in America, and women lose their rights. And this week, we're reading Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis, a graphic novel memoir, a true story, about growing up in a liberal family in Iran, as a religious fundamentalist group took over her country and women lost their rights. They didn't really believe it was happening until it was too late to stop it. And now this.

As I told my students this morning, the water is boiling.
