Good women and lit….

Good women and lit. class today! We're still just barely getting to the women part, but I want to do some framing this first week. So we reviewed intersectionality, Nalo Hopkinson's 'racism is like swimming in shit' metaphor, discussed (in the context of Chimamanda Adichie's TED talk) our own experiences of stereotypical assumptions people have made about us, or that we've made about others, talked about learning to 'fail better,' and I have sent them off to watch Jay Smooth's excellent three minute video on "How to Tell Someone They Sound Racist."

They laughed when I compared it to telling your friend they have a booger hanging off the end of their nose. Yes, the conversation may be a bit awkward, but if you're a good friend, you'll give them a chance to clean that up.
