Brought munchkin donuts for class today, to enjoy during the ceilidh. Wish we could've done it properly with Irish whiskey and beer, but I'm teaching undergrads, after all. But we went around in a circle having them read (and explain) Irish political poetry and song. None of my students were brave enough to sing this time around (although I've had a few in the past, including one who brought in his guitar!), but they picked some great pieces to discuss, like Yeats's "Easter 1916." I sang three songs myself -- "The Minstrel Boy," "Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ye," and "Kilkelly, Ireland." As always, I teared up at the end of Kilkelly, and fully half my class did too, I'm pretty sure.
