Funny that today is…

Funny that today is International Mother Language Day, given that I taught an essay centered on just that issue today, Douglas Hyde's "The Necessity of De-Anglicising Ireland." (http://www.gaeilge.org/deanglicising.html) Had a mild argument with my students on the value of preserving languages other than English, and not naming all of our kids John and Jane. :-)

Also serendipitous that I made a host of Sri Lankan dishes today. Brinjal sambol! Idiyappam! Am planning on having idiyappam with sothi and pol sambol for breakfast tomorrow. YUM.

(For those not in the know, Idiyappam = string hoppers, pol = coconut, brinjal = eggplant, and sothi is a mild coconut milk curry. Funny random note -- the paint color in our dining room is Farrow & Ball's Brinjal, a gorgeous reddish-purple.)
