This is the first of my hydrangeas to bloom this year, Penny Mac (named for Penny McHenry, who founded the American Hydrangea Society in 1994). Adorable mophead blooms, and will eventually grow to 4-5 ft tall x 3-4 ft wide, so not as much of a monster as some hydrangeas. Penny Mac has the delightful property of blooming on both old and new wood, which I think means that I can prune it back hard if I feel the need and it will still bloom gorgeously.
Penny Mac also blooms for a long time -- it started opening on June 1st, and is still going strong a month later, with no signs of stopping anytime soon. If I'm reading the websites right, I think I can expect it to bloom all summer. Awesome. I love the pale green-to-white-to-pink colors it's naturally making in my yard, although I can turn it blue too, apparently. Those wacky hydrangeas...
