Need book…

Need book recommendations. On vacation, and would like to read something splendid. What have you read in the last year that just blew you away? I mean, REALLY. The kind of book you would shamelessly press on people and insist that they read right now.

Random sampling of books I have adored: anything by Bujold, ditto Pratchett, ditto Le Guin, Jennifer Cruisie's romances, Austen of course, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime (Haddon), most of the Louise Penny mysteries (3 & 4 were kind of weak but 1 was v. good and 6 was one of the best mysteries I've read EVER), and speaking of mysteries all of Dorothy Sayers, G.K. Chesterton's not too shabby either, The Bone People (Hulme), Set This House in Order (Ruff), LotR & Hobbit, and let's not forget YA -- L'Engle, Lloyd Alexander, Susan Cooper.

That's enough to go on for now, eh? Help.

11:40 update: I just finished (moments ago), re-reading Laura Ingalls Wilder's _Little House in the Big Woods_. A perfect book to revisit as we head into winter. Particularly of interest to anyone who likes cooking, gardening, building things, etc. My god, how those people WORKED. Humbling.

  1. Graceling, When You Reach Me, Leviathan, Liar, The True Meaning Of Smekday, are a handful of things that we’ve read in the past year and really loved.

  2. Call the Darkness Light
#7 in the Louise Penny series
    Cutting for Stone
    Horse Heaven
    Master Butcher’s Social Club

Most not new, just really, really good
