Somewhere in April, I’m…

Somewhere in April, I'm supposed to take one more furlough day. Which is just impossible, because at this point, my days are scheduled from morning to night, and if I don't work on schoolwork every single day, I just won't get everything done by April 30th, when classes end. For example, this weekend, I have 70 papers to grade before Tuesday. At 15 minutes / paper, that's roughly 18 hours of grading.

Plan for the next three days:

    Saturday:

  • watch children 4 a.m. - 10 a.m.
  • 10 a.m.: go pick up Kevin's parents, go to house to show them progress, go to Two Fish to show them some stained glass lamps (and the piece I'm working on), have lunch
  • 1 - 3 p.m.: go to Oak Park library for local author event; sell and sign books
  • 4 - 8 p.m.: grade papers (Ann makes dinner for us, famous mustard chicken with broccoli and rice, yum)

    Sunday:

  • watch children 4 a.m. -8 a.m.
  • Adriana comes to help with kids in morning
  • at some point, Kevin gets up and gets parents and does stuff with them
  • grade papers from 9 - 5
  • 6 p.m. - dinner with George R.R. Martin and his fans in Greektown

    Monday:

  • watch children 4 a.m. -9 a.m.
  • Jarmila comes @ 9
  • get dressed, go to campus
  • work on Asian American Knowledge Bowl event: questions, flyers, publicity
  • 1 - 3 p.m. grant application meeting
  • 3 - 9 p.m., or as long as it takes: finish grading papers

  1. If you don’t take a furlough day, can you claim the day worked but not paid as a tax deductible in-kind donation to the university on your tax return next year?

Oh, maybe, but I don’t know that it’s worth the extra hassle for just one day. Mostly, it’s just annoying. I don’t particularly want to donate a day of work to the university right now.

You can’t claim it as a donation without also claiming the non-received salary as income. It works out to be a negative, I’m afraid. (Former tax accountant.)
