Notes from the…

Notes from the Road:

Well, we got a very late start -- we had hoped to be out of the house by noon, and ended up not leaving until 3. Sigh. When you're moving away from home for five months, there's a lot of small stuff to take care of! And of course, that meant we hit rush hour traffic leaving Chicago, delaying us further.

But once we were out of the city, it all went pretty smoothly. Puppy and baby did a lot of napping in the car (which may not bode well for our sleep tonight), and we chugged along nicely with just a few stops. We had packed a bunch of snack food and cold cuts in the effort to not eat *too* unhealthily on the road, but I did end up having some fast food Chinese for dinner. The rice felt relatively healthy, anyway, and I don't think my chicken with green beans was too bad. :-) The orange chicken on the other hand, while tasty, is I think at least half sugar and fat.

I drove a few hours, but mostly it was Kevin at the wheel. We listened to music for a few hours, and then I napped while he listened to the first book of George R. R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire. One thing we invested in for the trip is a nice car stereo (an Alpine) that has an excellent iPod interface. We have enough audiobooks for weeks of travelling. :-)

We finally stopped for the night around midnight in Avoca, at the Motel Capri, which allows dogs for an additional $6. The room is nice enough, though a fridge would be a welcome addition. I'm a bit buzzed at the moment, but I'm guessing I'll crash soon, which is good, since i'm supposed to take the morning driving shift. And...hmm....I think that's it for notes from the road. 427 miles down, 1728 miles to go...

Oh, we’ve both read the series before, and like it. It’s good to have something that we’ve read before to listen to in the car, so that we can doze without missing anything important.

  2. I’m reading the series right now… I’m nearing the middle of the third book, A Storm of Swords. I had to take a break after book 2… it was just too epic and I was in the middle of buying my first house — no time for personal reading.

Anyway, I just stumbled across your journal — actually, I got linked to it by your post on Amazon.com which was attached to your book, which was linked to by a girl in Singapore that I also just discovered earlier this evening (www.theintimatestranger.com). Amazing how the Internet can take you all around the world and back again in a few short minutes!

How I got there? I think I was searching for info about ‘Maggie Q’ (who recently had roles in Live Free or Die Hard and Mission Impossible III).

Anyway, enough of my rambling. Just glad to find out there are other fans of “the Song” out there. 🙂
