SLF $300 Travel Grant -- deadline July 31, 2004
The SLF is pleased to announce a $300 travel grant, intended to assist writers with their research. Travel should take place within one calendar year from the time of the grant. Grant recipients will be requested to write a short statement (500-1000 words) describing their experience for the SLF website and records.
Grants will be awarded by a committee of SLF staff members, on the basis of merit.
To apply, please send the following materials to [insert e-mail here], in a plain text (no attachments) file:
- a statement of intent; tell us where you want to travel to and describe the project you're working on (a short story, a novel, a series of poems, an essay, etc.) -- no more than 500 words
- a writing sample, in the genre in which you plan to write -- up to 5000 words
Submissions will be read from July 1st, 2004 to July 31st, 2004. Submissions received after that date will be returned unread. Applicants will be notified of our decision by September 1, 2004.
You say that “merit” is the basis on which the travel grant will be awarded, but I wonder, the merit of what? For writing grants, it’s usually the merit of a writing sample, but it isn’t clear here. Could be literary merit, financial merit, something else…
Good point, thanks. Will work on it.
Somehow the necessity of the travel and research ought to be part of the criterion. If the only purpose of the research is to get a few facts right in the opening paragraphs of a novel, then no matter how good the writing sample, a travel grant from SLF is probably not justified.
