Sadness. Woe. My…

Sadness. Woe. My computer, it is comatose. The nice folks at Apple are sending me a box, and tomorrow I will put it in the box and send it back to them. They will then say arcane spells over it, probably replace the logic board (whatever that means), and send it back to me in 5-7 business days. I have given them $50 to try to recover whatever data they can, but they guarantee nothing. They may send it back with all the data, some of the data, or none of the data (if the last, they will refund my $50). Misery. Calamity. Lamentation.

In the interim, I'll be working on our semi-functional spare computer, which mostly has net and not much else. My last backup was, oh, two months ago. I do have backups of all my recent story revisions online. It could have been much worse. That's what I keep telling myself.

  1. Yikes! One can only offer commiserations over such
calamitous occurences. In other words, it really, really sucks when stuff like this occurs, one of the worst things that can happen to someone attached to their computer. Well, I’m not being very cheerful am I 🙁 Hope they get to recover *SOME* of the data! And at least you have story backups! That’s the most important thing, IMO.

  2. Oh Mary Anne, I feel your pain. I had a bad crash in November. I lost one hard drive, then a second, within the space of a week. And then, a few weeks ago, during the complete rebuild of the computer, the backup drive crashed, taking some of my backups with it. Like you, I have a backup that’s about 2 months old (because the automatic backup system we’d set up wasn’t working…), and there will be a great deal to rebuild. Some things are lost entirely. We’ve had two of the drives at a data recovery service and they’ve been useless. I hope your story ends better!
