Solstice, a Prayer
for Those Lost at Sea

Today, someone close to me is ill,
grievously so; we soon embark
on that dismal ocean, uncertain when
or if, the shore appears. No map
for this new country, no portolan
guide to safe harbors. Still, I have
travelled dark waters before, have
found myself tossed about, fate's
waves smashing me against
the rocks -- and still I stand. May one
journey give hints of how to travel
forward. For dawn waits, the sun
must rise, one way or another. Tonight,
the longest night, then days lengthen,
inexorable. Like the snowdrops
and scilla, we burst through, tilting
our heads up, reaching for the sun.
