Am I nuts to think about…

Am I nuts to think about designing my own cover for the ebook release of Torn Shapes? I know I'm not a digital artist, or much of an artist at all. But I kind of want to try. In part because I have no budget for this, but mostly because I want to do something a bit weird -- tear some paper into shapes, stitch onto it, and then photograph that somehow to use for the cover image.

Ideally, I'd like a sort of 3D coming off the page effect, like these covers:

Nabokov's, Speak Memory
Ben Marcus, Leaving the Sea
Phillip Pullman, Grimm Tales
Yvette van Boven, Homemade Winter
Gwen Hedley, Drawn to Stitch
Robert Louis Stevenson, Treasure Island
Gordon Claridge, Drugs and Human Behavior
D.C. Pierson, The Boy Who Couldn't Sleep and Never Had To
Mark Lindquist, The King of Methlehem

And various others on this page: http://pinterest.com/mohanraj/books-cover-design/

But I'm not sure how to do that, photographically. Or what I do after that, in terms of adding text to the image.
