I am drowning in…

I am drowning in clothes. I knew that with the moves and stuff in storage and needing to go back to work and two pregnancies that I had too many clothes, but I didn't know that I had essentially two full wardrobes' worth. I think I am finally done laundering and trying on and sorting and folding everything, but lord. I think the whole project took close to six solid hours. A day of my life, spent on clothes. Argh. That's one I'm never getting back. Also, my arms are tired.

Here are some resolutions for the future:

  • everything in my closet must a) fit, and b) look great on me -- ideally, I should c) love it too.
  • seasonal change -- fall/winter and spring/summer -- what's not in season goes in storage
  • keep everything the way it looked when we were selling our house -- i.e., the racks shouldn't be more than three-quarters full, so that clothes can be easily accessed; nothing should look crowded
  • if a new piece of clothing comes in, something in the closet must go -- this should help my budget too!

Now, if I could just find a way to keep slippery strappy dresses from sliding off wood hangers -- those little loopy things at the armpit don't work nearly as well as I'd like. Advice? I'm tempted to glue velcro down, but there must be a better solution out there.

Also, I would like to add a resolution that Kevin should always put his clothes away, rather than drop them on the floor, but sadly, that is not up to me. Maybe we should have gone for his/her closets in this renovation, instead of a shared walk-in. Sigh.

What shape is your closet in?

Update: Okay, two minutes of googling found many non-slip hanger strips; I was not the first person to encounter this problem. Anyone have any experience using these from Organize-It? They look pretty good, and I'd buy a few packs if I were sure they would work well. (Side note: I didn't know there was a store called Organize-It. Danger, danger, Will Robinson. Hello, I'm Mary Anne. I'm an organization junkie. Hello, Mary Anne!)

I’m trying not to buy new hangers; we have lots of pretty cherry wood ones that we bought back when we were trying desperately to sell our condo — the home staging people claimed that having wood hangars made your closet (and thereby) your home look classy and desirable. We got a ton at Target, and I think we have more hangers than clothes at this point. 🙂 So I’m hoping to adapt those, rather than buy new ones.

But those are very pretty! 🙂

  2. My closet is a mess. I’ve found with strappy dresses I just loop the straps over the center hanger bit….

When I moved out of MD I gave bags and bags of clothes away to the church down the street, and gave a bunch more to the neighbors as well… I’d gone down from a size 22/24 (not sure what my top size was) to an 18/16 at that point…

I do wish that I’d saved one larger item for inspiration….

  3. I like the look of those Organize-It strips, but if you want to avoid spending money, you could experiment with wrapping rubber bands around each end of a coathanger. They’d provide some friction, and if that wasn’t enough, you could tuck a strap under a bit of rubber band.
