We’ve agreed to buy…

We've agreed to buy a house! The Beautiful Gunderson, at 714 S. Elmwood Ave., Oak Park. More photos from before. They're keeping their washer and dryer and the acorn lamp in the front hall, but leaving us the piano. (Which needs some repair, but is pretty much playable now.) I need some sheet music. :-)

Our buyers have requested a mortgage extension 'til the 17th (we think just because they were slow), so there's still some chance that they don't get it and all of this falls through. Plus, there's our inspection of the Elmwood house (hopefully early next week), and hoping no major disasters turn up there. And then much packing, and then moving out on the 29th, and final walk-throughs that evening, and closings on the 30th, and moving in. If all goes well, we should be settled in by the end of the month.

Think good thoughts for us, as we enter the final stage!

Gods, I don't ever want to go through this process again. Or at least not for another thirty years or so.

  1. It’s only 17 minutes from my home by car. 2 hours and change if I walk. Must remember to make sure the little pretty car icon is selected on Google Maps on my iPhone.

Heh. How long is the drive to our place for you now? Just curious.

The new house is also a scant half-mile from a Blue line stop, if you’d rather do that. We’re very pleased about that — it supports my contention that we’re not actually moving to the suburbs, since we’re still on a subway line. 🙂 From the downtown Jackson/Dearborn Blue line stop, it’s 21 minutes to our stop in Oak Park, plus the bit of walk at the end.

See? Not a suburb at all! Sharmi told me today that some of her friends, when they hear that her hip, avant-garde big sister now has two children and a dog and is moving to the suburbs are quite disappointed. But no need! 🙂

Heh. It’s not actually the Mad Hatter house — we did bid on that one first, but they wouldn’t come down anywhere close to what we thought was reasonable. Ah well. This house is much closer to move-in-ready, which, given the whole new baby thing, is probably a wise choice. 🙂

  4. You’re probably still avant-garde, but I’m sorry to report: Oak Park *is* a suburb. I imagine they like to think of themselves as a town. Not part of Chicago. You will soon feel the same.

On the Blue Line, the walk/ride from my house to yours would be more than an hour. I don’t think that’s going to be an option.

I wasn’t suggesting the Blue line for *you*. But for those of our friends who live downtown, or west loop, or near northish, it’s a decent option, esp. if they don’t have cars.

The house looks lovely. Have you sold the previous place? I bought a house once and sold it later, having decided I am not a house owner by nature. But I’ve never bought and sold at the same time.

We’ve sold our condo, at least in theory. 🙂 Everyone told us that in this economy, it was much wiser not to risk carrying two mortgages if things went badly.
