I have occasionally read…

I have occasionally read the blog Bitch Ph.D.. For some reason, I ended up reading a whole ton of it in the last two days, including this series of poly w/kids posts. And their comments. So that's where my last freaked-out post comes from (on the Chicago Moms' Blog), and also why I haven't gotten my Tamil homework done yet. Highly recommended, though I think she and I will have to mostly agree to disagree about cheating. (Well, not exactly. But it's super-complicated, and I've already written one over-long blog post today.)

Today, Shannon is coming by in a bit to hang out and write together, and then he's joining me, Dan and Nadya, and maybe Kevin (if he finishes up work in time) for dinner. Simple menu, since our cooking abilities are slightly limited here (would you believe, this place doesn't have an oven???) -- cheese and bread and berries to start; salad with mixed greens, grilled asparagus, fresh mozzarella, plum tomatoes, and balsamic vinaigrette; penne with a spicy portobello-mushroom and tomato sauce. Shannon's bringing dessert.

  1. Wal-Mart has sold small electric ovens that are large enough to hold a medium size baking dish. We use one called a Munsey Oven, sort of an overgrown toaster oven, and it works fairly well, heats unevenly, temperatures are actually higher than the thermostat says, but useful anyway. We bake biscuits in it and cook casseroles in it, all summer long. I don’t think they still sell the Munseys, but they do sell similar ovens, roughly $80 or so.

Actually, there’s one of those in the apartment — it just looks so sad. I look at it and think, “I could never make a Thanksgiving turkey in that!” 🙂

  3. You don’t know how lucky you are to have one of these ovens. They we’re one of the best made, most highly regarded toaster ovens ever made. I’ve had mine for 12 years and it is just now starting to show it’t age. Munsey stopped making them several years ago when Wal-mart cancelled their contract with the company. I would give my eye teeth to find a Munsey M-88 in good condition for sale!
