More details, from Sandy…

More details, from Sandy at HC, with the money specifics stripped out:

"The first is an Italian pre-emptive offer from Piemme. This is a very good offer -- especially for a first collection of stories. Piemme belongs to the larger Mondadori group and has a strong literary and commercial list. Some of their authors include Yann Martel, Michael Connelly, Jennifer Weiner, and Kahled Hosseini.

"The second offer is actually a 2-book offer in Brazil from Rocco. Rocco is a very successful Brazilian company that publishes such authors as Amy Tan, Carlos Fuentes, Jeffrey Eugenides, Elmore Leonard, and Hannah Tinti. The editor, Vivianne Wyler, is extraordinarily passionate about the stories and the writing."

  1. Mary Anne,

This may be a simple question but in the case of non-english language foreign countries, are these deals to translate and print your books? or to print and sell them in English in those countries?

    Shannon

  2. To translate and print the books; they’re advances against royalties for the translated editions. So we now have three languages: German, Italian, and Portuguese. 🙂

And Sean — I think I’m actually a little overwhelmed, between the last few days of stress and emotion, and this news. Happy, but also a bit numb.

  3. Congrats, Congrats!

While in the midst of midterms (I had to take a little break :)) I was so happy to read this great news. Then I realized I had never congratulated you on the book deal in the first place! I can’t wait for it to come out in Canada! I’ll be the first person to buy it! It’ll be strange to buy a book where I’ve already read most of the stories, but wonderful too.
All the excitement will not hit you for a while, but I’ll jump in joy for you in the meantime.

    Congratulations again!

  4. I hope that even if people have read most of the stories (only four of the twenty have been published, but if you’re on my mailing list, you’ve seen most of them in at least an early draft), that reading the book will still be a rewarding experience. I really do think it came out surprisingly like a novel, when everything was arranged in order and some of the links between stories were strengthened and/or clarified. 🙂
