My life is grading. I teach writing, but here's a little math problem:

Quiz

Mary Anne teaches four classes. Each class has 23 students. She can grade a 4-5 page paper in 10-15 minutes. She needs a short break between papers, or her hand cramps and her brain spasms and she starts reading the first sentence of the paper over and over again. She averages 3 papers/hr, with breaks for doing dishes, checking mail, etc.

Questions

  1. How long does it take to grade each class?
  2. How many days will it be before she hands back all the papers?
  3. What will she do when they hand her their second paper, a scant week after the first one was due?

Answers

  1. Roughly 8 hours.
  2. She had originally estimated four (get them on Wednesday, hand them back Monday, so they could look at them before they handed in their new paper the following Wednesday), but it's looking more like six to eight.
  3. If you answered a) bite her lip 'til it bleeds, b) desperately try to avoid looking at them by scrubbing her kitchen floor, or c) run away screaming, you get partial credit. If you answered d) all of the above, you pass.
Congratulations! There will be another test in a week. And another the week after that. And the week after that. And the week...

P.S. Yes, I still love teaching. I adore it. But grading this many papers just plain sucks.
